I've had a really interesting week. I'm pooped. I'm going to try to make this blurb short. I found a dead bat on my porch a week ago Friday night.
Hubby and I, out of responsible citizenry, decided we should bag it and take it to the City. We did. All our cats (4) were sitting around looking at the dead "thing" and we assumed one of them delivered it to us.
That next Monday morning we delivered it to the City headquarters. We received a call today saying, "please quarantine your pets...
That bat tested POSITIVE FOR RABIES.
Yeah, for real. No third world countries required. Just right on my front porch!
I'm scared. For the first time in my life I have looked up what rabies is...kind of like the Bubonic plague and so forth...thought it was not a threat to us.
But, I also learned that the Raccoons that have been visiting our front porch and our kitty feeding area are 40% at large for carrying Rabies...Lord, I'm scared.
This is too weird. Watch your animals and make sure they are inoculated. Later in the rain~Deb

this is frightening - today we had a call about a bat in one of our company listings - I hope it all turns out ok for the other animals
DEB, we talked about this earlier today so I was looking for your post. I think all your furry friends are going to be just fine. The good news is that it was a bat that wasn't half eaten.
Deb - I am not surprised. Yes, I knew about bats and rabies and raccoons. My neighbor actually got bit by a rabid raccoon after she hear her dog howling and ran out to the open garage and broke up a fight between the masked wildlife beast and her dog. Fortunately, the dag had it's rabies shot. My neighbor was not so fortunate and had to get a series of shots - in her stomach. Also, raccoons are carriers of syphilis! I only becamea country girl 9 years ago but you learn this stuff quickly. Be careful. I have bats flying around in my woods, raccoons, deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, chipmunks - once I even thought I heard monkeys in the woods but my neighbor reminded me that it was the wine!
Deb, I wouldn't have thought to bring the dead bat to the county to be checked. Very concerning, but I'm sure your pets will be okay also.
I wonder if rabies, Deb, is contagious when they are dead, or they just have to bite you.
Deb - Bats are nasty creatures, like a flying rodent with sharp nasty teeth. Like your post and here is another (BAT) pic for your bat story!

Deb... sorry to hear about your feline babies. Hopefully they won't have any adverse side effects from their contact with the bat. This makes me glad I'm in Alaska. Bears and moose I can deal with... bats? Yuck!

Amazing how those creatures get around. I'd be wondering where they live and probably check the attic. Quarantine of pets is, I believe, routine.

Deb - all I can say is WOW, that has got to be scary. You were right to take the bat in to the City. Your cats were probably not bitten by the bat, however, I am not sure if bats have fleas. Keep an eye out on your cats behaviour, they are probably ok but better safe than sorry.

Ewe... Thank you for sharing this information. You are right that I would assume we would not have that issue, but you never know. There are lots of creatures out there.

Deb - This happened at our church not too long ago (dead bat found, positive for rabies). I think many of them are rabid, kinda like Realtors.

Wow, now that's scary! That was a really good idea that you had to take it in - I don't think I would have known to do that. (I do now, though!)
Yuck, sorry Deb. I had a racoon that was coming to my back porch with his girlfriend last winter because my garage is far from my house (relatively speaking) and I had forgotten to haul the garbage cans down to the garage.
It seemed like months before they finally left and it still grosses me out. Those suckers are big here. I wouldn't go on my porch for awhile, luckily I had lawncare for the summer.

Hey everybody! We are in a holding pattern. Our animals are all on the "time to renew" timeline with their shots except for Jill my dog. She had hers in February. All four cats are "due" and believe it or not they were "due" on the 19th of August, 2008...which means I pray they will all be okay! The vet thinks they are. We are taking them all in on the beginning of the week to give them boosters but we should be okay. This is so scary though. We have always been so dilligent with out Vet visits and we care so much about our animals...why on earth would this happen at the time that we are due??? Is that just life or what?
I love my Diary. I will be able to print all that I want to remember as a highlight within my life. Thank you all for contributing with your valuable posts. I so appreciate it.
